Online sales will increase in the near future

The next few months may bring renewed increases in the value of online sales - said the expert of the Polish Economic Institute, Ignacy Święcicki, in a comment for PAP. He added that this was related to the restrictions on economic activity reintroduced in March due to the pandemic.

Święcicki also drew attention to the possible significant increase in e-commerce sales in the food industry. He indicated that in Poland only 0.8 percent. value of food products is sold over the Internet, and the development potential in this area is very large. "The first opportunity to verify to what extent this potential can be realized in the short term is the upcoming Easter, which generates increased grocery shopping. This year, like last year, it will be subject to severe anti-pandemic restrictions" - he assessed.

According to the expert, the coming months may bring renewed increases in the value of online sales, which will be related to the restrictions on economic activity reintroduced in March, first in some provinces, and now in the entire country.

In his opinion, in the long run, the development of e-commerce will be positively influenced by the activities of sellers and platforms, which are aimed at improving competitive conditions, shortening delivery times and developing tools that reduce barriers to starting online trading.

Ignacy Święcicki indicated that the value of online sales in February decreased by 9.3 percent compared to January, and its share in total retail sales amounted to 8.6 percent. "This is the lowest result in the last four months" - he noted. In his opinion, the factor that contributed to this was the opening of shopping centers on February 1, which is indicated by the change in the sale of textiles, clothing and footwear, i.e. the category of goods for which shopping malls are the most important sales channel. He noted that while the entire value of sales of this type of goods in February was higher by over 70 percent. compared to January, online sales were 6.9 percent. lower.

"From among all product categories analyzed by the Central Statistical Office, only in the group + Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts + sales in February was higher than in January, and the largest decrease was in the group + Press, other sales in specialized stores" - by almost 20 percent "- he added in the commentary.
