The average number of people out of work in Germany in October was 2.76 million, i.e. by 87 thousand. less than in September. This means a drop in the unemployment rate by 0.2 percentage points to 6.0%. - the Federal Employment Agency (BA), based in Nuremberg, announced on Thursday.
However, there were 556 thousand unemployed, i.e. 1.2%. more than in October 2019, and taking into account the seasonal adjustment, their number decreased in the current month compared to the previous month by only 35 thousand.
"Unemployment and underemployment fell sharply in October. The use of short-term work continues to decline. However, the labor market is still clearly showing the effects of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic," BA president Detlef Scheele said at a monthly press conference.
As the dpa agency points out, BA's statistics have not yet reflected the possible effects of the sudden increase in the daily numbers of new coronavirus infections since mid-October. The representative day is always chosen more or less in the middle of the month. (PAP)
