The double life of gamers and the impact of games on personality - research results

The results of the survey show that gamers lead a "double life", with most of them preferring their gaming alter ego to their everyday life. To mark this dual identity, Lenovo has partnered with renowned Marvel comic book artist and game designer Salva Espín.

The results of a survey conducted in September 2022 by Censuswide show the "double life" of gamers and the impact of games on their personalities. 7,010 respondents in Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Sweden took part in the survey.

More than half (52%) of gamers identify with their online alter ego more than their real identity. Inspired by this dual personality, Lenovo has partnered with comic artist and game designer Salva Espín to create a collection of limited edition Lenovo Legion "Second Skin" stickers. The final sticker can be designed by anyone.

Gamers' work lives

The digital world is indeed the "matrix" of the real world - Lenovo's research found that gamers feel most authentic when they play at home (58%), followed by socializing with friends and family (52%) and participating in other personal hobbies and interests (46%).

With almost 60% of gamers choosing to continue their gaming life before they retire, the survey results revealed that certain professions feel most authentic when playing certain genres of games. According to the Lenovo survey, office workers (44%), medical and healthcare workers (42%), financial workers (38%) and academics (40%) feel most authentic when playing strategy games. In addition, those working in the computer sector feel most authentic when playing RPGs (45%), while developers (40%) choose role-playing games.

Lenovo Legion takes you to another dimension of reality

Lenovo Legion laptops act as an epic conductor connecting the worlds gamers travel through. Equipped with AMD Ryzen™ processors and AMD Radeon™ graphics, Lenovo Legion 7 and Lenovo Legion Slim 7 laptops offer greater freedom of movement while providing the power and performance users need to win on devices with style and drama pushed to the limit.

"Second Skin"

Many gamers lead double lives, but rarely this duality is showed. To solve this problem, Lenovo Legion has partnered with Salva Espín, a comic book artist and game designer known for his work with Marvel on characters such as Deadpool, She-Hulk, X Men and Wolverine, to create a series of "Second Skin" stickers.

Salva Espin said:

"It's an amazing feeling to be part of a project that allowed me to indulge in all my passions: design, gaming and technology. I really enjoyed the whole creative process, working closely with the Lenovo team to create five designs that best illustrate the survey results. I already have a sticker on my Lenovo Legion 7 that reflects the duality between my professional self and my gaming alter ego, and I can't wait to see these designs on thousands of people's laptops!”

The stickers are a comparison of what our lives would be like if we always used our true online version of ourselves.  From a Mage having coffee to a knight checking his medical equipment, these stickers are meant to encourage players to embrace their alter egos, no matter what character they play.

Alberto Spinelli, Chief Marketing Officer, Lenovo EMEA, comments: "Working with Salva on the Second Skin campaign has been a lot of fun for us. As a brand that has always been passionate about supporting gamers to do amazing things - both in game and in life - our ambition is for Second Skin stickers to encourage our community to be their authentic self, whether they are working or in the middle of a battle. Laptop stickers are an expression of our personality, and in these designs Salva has managed to brilliantly capture the collision of the two worlds. We hope they spread as much joy as they have brought us."

A design that anyone can create

The final sticker will be created by the Lenovo Legion Gaming community. Anyone can submit a sketch of their own alter ego by simply responding to the community thread and submitting their creation. The deadline for submissions is January 26, 2023. At that point, Salva will personally select his favorite and then work with the winner to turn his concept into the final Second Skin design.
