Severe consequences, including dismissal, threaten Vatican employees who refuse to get vaccinated against the coronavirus for no good reason. The decree on this matter was issued by the governor of the Vatican City, Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello.
Vaccinations in the Vatican are voluntary.
The decree announced on Thursday stipulates that people who refuse to accept the Covid-19 preparation for health reasons may receive other job responsibilities without changing their salary.
Those who do not want to be vaccinated without a valid reason are at risk of "varying degrees of consequences until the employment relationship is terminated", proclaims Cardinal Bertello's decree.
He wrote that refusing to take the vaccine could put others at risk and increase the risk to public health.
The decree of the governor of the Vatican City State is based on the 2011 sanitary regulations on the obligations of employees.
In addition, penalties of 25 euros were introduced for the lack of a mask and 1,500 euros for violating the quarantine rules.
The observance of these requirements is supervised by the Vatican gendarmerie. (PAP)
