Team Behind Ather
Chief Executive Officer
Tarun Mehta graduated from IIT Madras with a degree in Engineering Design (Dual Degree 2012). Along with Swapnil Jain, he conceptualised and started ‘Ather Energy’ in April 2013. Ather has developed India’s first smart an electric scooter that aims to revolutionize two-wheeler driving in India. At IIT, Tarun was associated with various product development teams and actively involved with the entrepreneurship ecosystem (C-TIDES). He worked on more than a dozen prototypes over a wide range of topics and has six co-patents (pending), under his name. Driven by his core interest towards electric vehicles, Tarun quit his job at Ashok Leyland in the year 2012 to start work on battery packs which is one of the biggest existing shortcomings in electric vehicles today. Eventually, realizing that the problem isn’t just the battery pack, the team was drawn to the idea of designing and building a completely new electric vehicle.
As CEO at Ather, Tarun drives the strategic thinking for the company while being involved with the close-knit Ather team in reviewing every aspect of the vehicle development. He represented Ather in the ‘Technical Advisory Group for Electric Mobility’, to the Government of India. He also led the Electric Vehicle group in the Champions of Change program organised by Niti Aayog.
Chief Technology Officer
Swapnil Jain is an Engineering Design graduate from IIT Madras. Along with Tarun Mehta, he conceptualized 'Ather Energy'. With the belief in an electric and connected future,
Ather has built an entire EV ecosystem in India with a scooter as well as a charging
infrastructure. An ardent believer in the power of technology, he believes the best innovation happens
when multiple technologies work together.
Intelligent electric vehicles for him exhibit the synergy between Software, Mechanical, Electronics and Algorithms. This makes the industry the best playground for innovation and hence has huge potential for market disruption.
Swapnil prefers a hands-on approach to problem-solving. He believes that a great the organisation can be built by focusing on the minute details of a problem but at the same time not losing focus on the broader goal.
Swapnil works on both the long term technology roadmap for Ather, as well as day-to-day aspects of creating a top-notch engineering team and culture.
