Free Stop Over Cities

A new flight search engine launched Monday with the intent of helping travelers find multi-day stopovers at no additional charge.

The search engine, Airwander, allows users to input their departure airport and final destination. Users can then either choose a specific city for their stopover or let Airwander recommend one. It’s also possible to search for one-way, round-trip, multi-city, or world tour flights.

Airwander will not only recommend add-on destinations that could save money, it will recommend the most advantageous itinerary for your trip. For example, the site will tell you if it’s better to book four separate one-way tickets with different airlines. Previously, this kind of itinerary would have taken lots of patience and many flight searches to find.

Airwander uses artificial antelligence to trawl through flight schedules and airfare. The algorithm was inspired by two travelers trying to plan an epic eight-month journey across South America.

While traveling south of the equator, co-founders Ela Bader and Douglas Deming spent hours poring over airfare options, according to TechCrunch. After months of trial-and-error, they discovered stopovers as a hack to save money and see more.

Technically, a stopover is a layover that lasts longer than 24 hours. Airwander will show travelers layovers starting at one day and much longer than they would probably ever need (we stopped testing the search engine at a 120-day layover).

Although Airwander is probably not a full replacement for a traveler’s preferred search engine, it’s an excellent option for multi-stop itineraries or even just weighing the options.
