Denmark closes its airspace to all UK flights for 48 hours from 10 am on Monday - Transport Minister Benny Engelbrecht informed on Twitter. The decision is due to the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus in the UK.
Restrictions on passenger traffic with Great Britain have been introduced or announced by many European Union countries, incl. The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Sweden.
The German presidency of the EU Council called an urgent meeting of representatives of EU member states on Monday on the new variant of the coronavirus. Several countries, including France and Spain, are calling for joint EU action on the rules of passenger communication with the UK.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also announced a crisis management meeting on Monday to discuss issues related to international movement in and out of the country.
According to UK authorities, the new variant of the coronavirus that is spreading in the country is more contagious than its predecessor, but it does not appear to be causing the disease more severely and is not intended to respond to the already developed Covid-19 vaccines. (PAP)
